Calculate your estimated gross and net salary under the junior doctor contract with our **NHS Junior Doctor Pay Calculator** for **2026/27**. Doctors in training in England are paid under a specialized contract rather than Agenda for Change. This free tool calculates your basic nodal pay, additional weekly hours (above 40), weekend allowances, night shift enhancements, and London weightingβestimating your final net monthly pay.
| Grade / Stage | Nodal Point | 2026/27 Basic Salary | Hourly Basic Rate |

Weekend allowance is paid as a percentage of your basic nodal salary, determined by your rostered weekend shift frequency. The rates are: 1 in 2 weekends = 15% | 1 in 3 = 10% | 1 in 4 = 7.5% | 1 in 5 = 6% | 1 in 6 = 5% | 1 in 7 = 4% | 1 in 8 = 3%.
Under the 2016 junior doctor contract in England, hours worked between 20:00 and 06:00 that are part of a shift lasting 8 hours or more receive a 37% enhancement on your basic hourly rate.
Unlike Agenda for Change staff who receive a percentage-based HCAS, junior doctors under the 2016 contract receive a flat-rate London allowance: Β£2,162 per year for outer London and Β£4,395 per year for inner London, which is added directly to your gross salary.
Your monthly NHS take-home pay is affected by various statutory and voluntary payroll deductions. Understanding how these are calculated can help you optimize your net income:
Schemes like Cycle to Work or lease cars are deducted from your gross pay before tax and NI are calculated, reducing your taxable income.
NHS Pension contributions are deducted from your gross salary before income tax is calculated, providing automatic tax relief at your marginal rate.
Student loans (Plan 1, 2, 4, 5, or Postgraduate) are calculated on your gross earnings above the specific plan threshold and deducted automatically.
