NHS Overtime Rules & Rates (Section 3)

NHS overtime is paid to staff who work hours in excess of the standard full-time week of **37.5 hours**. Overtime is governed by **Section 3 of the Agenda for Change handbook**:

  • Standard Overtime Rate: Overtime is paid at **time-and-a-half (1.5x)** your basic hourly rate.
  • Public Holidays: Any overtime worked on a public bank holiday is paid at **double time (2.0x)**.
  • Band 8 & 9 Exclusion: Under standard AfC terms, staff in **Bands 8a to 9** are not eligible for overtime payments.
  • Part-Time Staff: Part-time staff are paid at their basic single rate until their total weekly hours exceed 37.5 hours.
