This NHS paramedic salary calculator answers the role question band pages cannot: what does a paramedic earn across the ambulance pathway — from Newly Qualified Paramedic (NQP) consolidation, through Band 6 frontline paramedic, into Band 7 advanced/specialist posts and Band 8a senior / consultant entry roles — with take-home after pension, tax, NI, HCAS and the unsocial hours that dominate ambulance rotas.

Paramedics are paid on Agenda for Change. There is no separate “paramedic pay scale” — cash points are the national AfC bands. For England from 1 April 2026:
| Career stage | Typical band | Basic pay 2026/27 |
| Newly qualified paramedic (NQP) | Band 5 | £32,073–£39,043 |
| Paramedic (most common) | Band 6 | £39,959–£48,117 |
| Advanced / specialist / team leader | Band 7 | £49,387–£56,515 |
| Senior / consultant paramedic (entry) | Band 8a (some 8b/8c) | £57,528–£64,750 |
Ambulance rotas almost always include nights and weekends, so Section 2 unsocial hours (+30% night/Saturday, +60% Sunday/bank holiday for Bands 4–9) often lift gross pay well above the published spine point. The calculator defaults to a mixed-rota estimate — set night/weekend hours to zero for basic-only take-home.
Since September 2016, England ambulance Trusts have used a national Newly Qualified Paramedic consolidation of learning programme. NQPs are recruited against a Band 5 profile and work with additional clinical support for a period ordinarily up to 24 months.
NHS Employers’ agreement is clear: once consolidation is successfully completed, the paramedic moves to Band 6 automatically unless formal capability issues are already being managed. The new job description should match the agreed Band 6 paramedic profile. That pathway is the ambulance-specific example often cited alongside Annex 20 developmental progression from Band 5 to Band 6.
Always read the NHS Jobs advert: job evaluation, not the job title alone, sets the band.
Unlike many office-based AfC roles, frontline paramedic pay is strongly shaped by when you work. On top of basic:
Offsetting that are NHS Pension contributions (tiered), Income Tax, National Insurance and often student loan repayments after a paramedic science degree.
For shift-level cash, pair this page with the unsocial hours calculator, bank shift calculator and overtime calculator.
Student / trainee ambulance roles are different posts (often Band 3–4 support or trainee pathways depending on Trust). This calculator covers HCPC-registered paramedic bands (5–8a). Check your Trust’s student paramedic job description for the correct band before using Band 5 NQP figures.
Wales and Northern Ireland typically follow England AfC cash recommendations. Scotland negotiates separately and often pays higher cash points. This calculator’s tax-nation switch applies Scottish income tax bands to the England paramedic cash scale for a quick comparison.
Most qualified paramedics are Band 6 (£39,959–£48,117 basic in England). Newly qualified paramedics start on Band 5 (£32,073–£39,043) during NQP consolidation. Advanced and specialist roles sit at Band 7 (£49,387–£56,515). Unsocial hours usually increase gross pay further.
Under the national NQP consolidation of learning agreement for England ambulance Trusts, successful completion (ordinarily up to 24 months) leads to automatic Band 6 progression unless formal capability issues apply.
Band 7 England AfC 2026/27 is £49,387–£56,515 basic. Typical roles include advanced/specialist paramedic and emergency services leadership posts.
Consultant and senior clinical leadership posts often start around Band 8a (£57,528–£64,750). Some evaluate at Band 8b or 8c depending on scope — check the advert and job evaluation outcome.
Yes for the same AfC band and pay point — paramedics and nurses share the national spine. Differences arise from banding outcomes, rota unsocial hours and local allowances.
Yes. Inner (20%), Outer (15%) and Fringe (5%) HCAS apply to eligible AfC ambulance posts in the same way as for other Agenda for Change staff.
